September Acquisitions

So, you know how I was trying really hard to rein in my spending on books over the summer and read the books I already owned?  Well, it went pretty darn well.  I am down to 4 hardcopy books and 7 ebooks, which feels very manageable.  It does also mean that with the return to my school schedule and these now quiet shelves, I’m itching to get back to the bookstore.

I made a couple of small purchases throughout the month, and then one big one from Book Outlet at the end of the month.  I don’t usually buy books over $5 and a couple of these are for my kids who are now getting into transitional books as they move from picture books to chapter books.

I have realized that a) I don’t like having books hanging over my in immense amounts, so I will probably try to curtail my spending in general anyway, b) buying books cold doesn’t really work for me.  I don’t have the money to buy lots of DNF books and I don’t have the time/patience to slog through books I’m not into, so I should stick to purchasing things I am pretty sure that I want, not ones I just want to try out, c) my library is awesome and I need to hit that hard when I needs the books, precious, d) I can read a lot when I am not taking classes, so that anything I do build up in this last year of grad school will get wacked out of the TBR in the next year.  And, I’m going to keep focusing on my remaining pre-May 2016 TBR.

19549841Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

159666The Birchbark House by Louise Erdich

With The Birchbark House, award-winning author Louise Erdrich’s first novel for young readers, this same slice of history is seen through the eyes of the spirited, 7-year-old Ojibwa girl Omakayas, or Little Frog, so named because her first step was a hop. The sole survivor of a smallpox epidemic on Spirit Island, Omakayas, then only a baby girl, was rescued by a fearless woman named Tallow and welcomed into an Ojibwa family on Lake Superior’s Madeline Island, the Island of the Golden-Breasted Woodpecker. We follow Omakayas and her adopted family through a cycle of four seasons in 1847, including the winter, when a historically documented outbreak of smallpox overtook the island.

Readers will be riveted by the daily life of this Native American family, in which tanning moose hides, picking berries, and scaring crows from the cornfield are as commonplace as encounters with bear cubs and fireside ghost stories. Erdrich–a member of the Turtle Mountain Band of Ojibwa–spoke to Ojibwa elders about the spirit and significance of Madeline Island, read letters from travelers, and even spent time with her own children on the island, observing their reactions to woods, stones, crayfish, bear, and deer. The author’s softly hewn pencil drawings infuse life and authenticity to her poetic, exquisitely wrought narrative. Omakayas is an intense, strong, likable character to whom young readers will fully relate–from her mixed emotions about her siblings, to her discovery of her unique talents, to her devotion to her pet crow Andeg, to her budding understanding of death, life, and her role in the natural world. We look forward to reading more about this brave, intuitive girl–and wholeheartedly welcome Erdrich’s future series to the canon of children’s classics.
